Arrival Film Review: The Courage to Embrace a Non-Linear Future
Some films focus on spectacle and visual effects, while others successfully make us reconsider some life decisions. Arrival is the perfect blend of science fiction and human stories. It further proves that an alien movie doesn't have to follow the usual template. In fact, it shows that a superb story can convey a deeper message.
A Different Kind of Courage: Knowing the Destination
While some films have thrilled me because of their connection to childhood or visual effects, Arrival offered something completely different. It would be too dramatic to say that it "hit me," but it made me think more deeply about some things. As someone who has always said, "I wish I knew what the future held so I wouldn't repeat certain things," this film convinced me that you don't always have to see everything in black and white.
The Heptapods' language, as the central motif of the film, reminded me that the environment shapes how we communicate. The ink-like visuals that run throughout the film represent a different way of communicating. What does that mean? It's about a mind that uses these symbols and doesn't think in a straight line.
I've seen courage as taking risks no matter what. But Arrival offers a completely different definition of courage. Brave people can also be those who, despite knowing the direction their life will take, still decide to continue on that path. It's this profound shift in the experience of fearlessness when you realize that someone shouldn't "fix" some things, but rather live life to the fullest.
Infinite Language: Beyond the Straight Line of Time
Why do I think this film is a masterpiece? The way it uses language has changed how we experience time. Life doesn't always have to be a straight line to get from one destination to another. From the beginning of the film, I was impressed by the special atmosphere. You know that something is coming, but somehow, for some unknown reason, you don't feel fear. In fact, curiosity "pushes" you to go further and discover more.
Details like buzzing and other sounds that the aliens use to communicate, as well as the feeling of being grounded that I had the whole time, created the perfect atmosphere. The different parts of life that overlapped were so well presented that they didn't confuse me. The storytelling was so realistic that I felt like I was in the film.
The Power of Understanding over Conflict
Many science fiction films have always had a similar plot. Aliens are attacking, they are aggressive, and they want to conquer the Earth. In Arrival, the emphasis is not on weapons, but on understanding. It further shows that our most powerful tool is the courage to accept what the future holds. In the end, the film stands as a powerful reminder that even when we are unable to change our destination, the journey to that destination is just as important.
